When Was Pickleball Invented? Origins & History
Pickleball was created in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Its founders were Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. What began as a family game developed into a sport with its own rules and equipment.
A sport with its own identity
Pickleball is played with paddles and a perforated ball, in singles or doubles. The compact court and non-volley zone create rallies where placement and patience matter. When you are starting out, learning to sustain a rally is often more useful than searching for a winning shot on every ball.
How to approach your first session
Whether you come from tennis, padel or no racket sport at all, spend your first session getting used to the bounce and court spacing. You do not need to turn your first day into a competition. Give the group a shared goal: keep several shots in play without losing control.
A simple plan for your first visit
- Start with a brief explanation of the serve, the two-bounce rule and the kitchen.
- Try short rallies before moving farther from the net.
- Rotate positions to discover where controlling the ball feels most difficult.
- Finish with a practice game and pause when a rule question comes up.
What to bring
A paddle, balls suitable for the surface, water and footwear designed for lateral movement. If you do not own equipment yet, ask whether the club offers loan paddles. If you are buying, compare each model's specifications and choose a paddle you can move comfortably.
You can start by comparing the DPRADIX FLOW T700 with the rest of the range. A paddle can support the learning process, but it does not replace it.
